POLICY ON MEDICAL EXEMPTION

  • Short Term Illness/ Injury:Students who must be excused from a class for one day must bring a note from home explaining the situation.
  • Extended Illness/ Injury:Students with illness of injury for an extended period of time must obtain a medical certificate from their doctor stating the nature of the injury of illness and the length of time the student will remain out of school.
  • A mutual arrangement will be made between student and teacher regarding make-up assignments. The assignments will have the same expectation that the student missed.
  • All overall expectations of a course will be assessed throughout the 70% term as well as the 30% culminating activities and final exam.

POLICY ON ATTENDANCE

Mindview Academy believes that regular attendance and punctuality are positive behaviours that should be fostered. Regular attendance is necessary for a student to gain the full benefits of educational instruction.  Ministry of Education has established a minimum of 110 hours of instruction for Grade 9 to Grade 12 students to qualify for each credit toward high school graduation.

Under the Act, a child must attend school regularly until the age of 18.  A student who is not of compulsory school age is required to attend regularly once he/she enrols.  In addition, school attendance for all students is conditional upon their behaviour.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR ATTENDANCE

Responsibility for attendance rests jointly with the student and his/her parents/guardians.

ABSENCES

  • Student absences are categorized as Excused OR Explained
  • Absences are considered excused if the activity is initiated by the school.  Excused absences may include, but are not limited to, field trips, sports trips, special group trips, conferences, suspensions, etc.
  • Absences are considered explained if they are for unavoidable cause and are supported by a written note or telephone call from a parent or guardian.  An unexplained absence is an act of truancy.

ATTENDANCE PROTOCOL

  • Attendance will be taken and recorded by teachers.
  • Where the parent/guardian has determined that the student must be absent from school, the parent/guardian must inform the school prior to the scheduled time for that class or no later than one day immediately after the student’s return to school.  Students who are 18 years of age or older may phone in their own absence reasons, in lieu of their parents/guardians.
  • In the case of long-term illness, the student’s absences must be supported by a medical certificate.

EXCUSED ABSENCES

After the first absence in a subject, the student and parents/guardians will be notified by the school. The student has to make up the missing time and work.

LATES

A late is defined as arriving at the classroom after the scheduled beginning of instruction.  Students are expected to be punctual for all of their classes.  A student who arrives at class late not only loses valuable instruction time, but also disrupts the learning of others.  Students who arrive late have to make up the missing time and work.

POLICY ON VACATIONS

Vacations outside of designated school holidays are strongly discouraged. If a family is planning vacations out of the designated holiday time, it is the student’s responsibility to inform the administration well in advance, and complete an “Extended Absence Form” from the main office. Students will be responsible for all work assignments and tests held during the time they are away. It may not be possible to make up certain types of assessments and evaluations.

If no prior warning of a vacation was given, a student may be assigned zero for missed work.

POLICY ON FIELD TRIPS

Students are expected to demonstrate responsible behavior during any school-sponsored activity such as athletic events, theatre excursion s, or science field studies. All school regulations apply to these functions. Students are requested to dress appropriately for trips away from the school since they act as an ambassador for Mindview School in the larger community.

Field trips are a privilege, not a right. Students who do not exhibit acceptable behavior in class, or whose academic performance is poor, may not attend. If a permission form has already been submitted, the privilege may be revoked and parents/guardians will be notified.

POLICY ON MEDICATION AND MEDICAL CONCERNS

Students are to bring to school only the required dosage for one school day at a time. Parents and guardians are requested to ensure that this procedure is followed. No persons shall give any medication to another person. This practice could be grounds for suspension or expulsion. The school does not store, distribute, or administer any medications for students.

It is a student’s responsibility to inform the office if he/she has any serious allergies or medical conditions. Parents and students are to advise teaching staff of serious allergies at the beginning of the school year in the registration forms and in writing. The school also requests that students contact their Principal to discuss the medical concerns.

Parking at Mindview Academy School is according to the regulation of the building at 2900 Steeles Avenue, Thornhill, Ontario. L3T4X1.

POLICY ON PHOTOCOPYING AND PRINTING

Photocopiers are only for administration and teacher as needed. Students are not permitted to photocopy at the school unless permitted by the principal or administration.

Before mass producing certain materials, teacher should first speak with their principal or supervisor. Students are to print their personal projects at home or public places or use of internet for paperless. Students must bring all of their own school supplies for project work.

POLICY ON SCHOOL CLOSURE – SNOW DAYS

In the event of a heavy snow/ice storm, families will be advised as soon as possible or call the school number for a message.

POLICY ON SCHOOL EQUIPMENT, TEXTBOOKS AND MATERIALS

Textbooks are the Students responsibility to buy directly from the publisher.
